002 The “Leave it” Command

Today we give a brief overview, and some examples, of the “Leave it” command for dog training. Short definition: teaching your dog to ignore a stimulus whether it is something they want or something that they don’t like.

I recommend that this be the very first command you work on with your dog whether they are a brand new 8 week old puppy, or whether they are a 10 year old house dog that needs to learn some new obedience.

There is a little bit of a learning curve that a skilled trainer can help you overcome with your dog, to ensure this is done properly, but none the less it is a paramount skill.

If, as we believe here at K9Philosophy, obedience isn’t really “obedience” unless it is done while there are distractions present, then this command must be considered paramount because its purpose is to take a distraction and immediately turn it into a non-distraction.

Thank you so much for spending your time with us! Wishing you a long and healthy K9 bond with your dogs.
